1. ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System)
Starting in 2024, non-EU travellers (including UK nationals) will be required to apply for an ETIAS before entering the Schengen Zone, which includes most European countries. This will be a mandatory pre-screening process for short stays (up to 90 days) for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
- What is ETIAS? ETIAS is an online system that checks travellers against security databases and screens for risks related to public safety, illegal immigration, and other factors.
- How to Apply: The application is straightforward and can be completed online. It requires basic personal information, travel details, and answers to security questions. Once approved, the authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- When to Apply: It is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your planned travel date, although the process is often faster.
Not sure if you need ETIAS?
If you are unsure whether you need to apply for ETIAS, you can check the official
website at https:// travel-europe.europa.eu/ etias_en to confirm your eligibility.
2. ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for the UK
Similarly, the UK is introducing its own ETA system for travellers from countries that do not require a visa for short stays. This system will be implemented in 2024.
- What is ETA? The ETA is an electronic authorization that allows travellers to visit the UK for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It will be a similar process to the ETIAS for European countries.
- How to Apply: The application will be available online and will require basic personal and travel details. Upon approval, the ETA will be valid for up to 2 years.
- When to Apply: You will need to apply for an ETA before your arrival in the UK. Like the ETIAS, it is recommended to apply in advance to avoid delays.
