The quiet revolution: futureproofing airports for climate and community

Environment and sustainability
As airports commit to net zero carbon targets, future planning increasingly depends on assumptions about the performance of emerging zero-emissions aircraft. Meanwhile, noise remains the most immediate and tangible environmental concern for surrounding communities, with many airports legally obligated to manage it alongside carbon reduction. Despite this, few consider the complex trade-offs between noise and carbon emissions. This presentation introduces a new methodology for forecasting noise and carbon impacts at the airport-specific fleet level, including future aircraft technology, enabling airports to assess environmental constraints holistically, support strategic planning and avoid unintended consequences of sustainability-driven decisions.
- Airport-specific forecasting of carbon and noise in line with the Sustainable Aviation UK roadmap
- Holistic (not disjointed) assessment of carbon and noise emissions
- An understanding of the competing demands between noise, carbon and air quality targets
- The impact that zero-emission aircraft might have on airport noise and carbon emissions
- How early identification and scenario-based forecasting can inform sustainable planning and investment prioritization (e.g. noise insulation schemes)
