Panel discussion: PIT’s Path to Energy Resilience and Independence
18 Mar 2026
Environment and sustainability
Two major aviation industry blackouts taught PIT that energy resilience isn’t optional—it’s essential business strategy. PIT responded by building a comprehensive microgrid that powers both airport and airfield operations, achieving complete energy independence while generating measurable cost savings and operational security. Building on this foundation, PIT is now developing the aviation industry’s first on-site SAF production facility with potential output of 120 million gallons annually—enough to supply significant portions of regional aviation fuel demand. This session reveals the technical, financial, and regulatory roadmap that other airports can follow to achieve similar energy independence and contribute meaningfully to the industry's net zero by 2050 commitment.
- • How energy independence drives airport ROI
- • Why onsite SAF production drives competitive advantage
- • How to build financing models for energy infrastructure at airports
- • How to approach regulatory strategies for energy projects
