Airport design, planning and development
In August 2025, the updated ICAO Annex 14 Vol. 1 officially came into effect, introducing a transformative approach to obstacle management at and around aerodromes. The new concepts of aeroplane design groups (ADG), obstacle-free surfaces (OFS) and obstacle evaluation surfaces (OES) mark a significant shift in how obstacles are both limited and assessed. These changes open up exciting opportunities, not only for aerodromes but also for urban development and renewable energy projects, while maintaining the safety and regularity of aircraft operations. Implementing these provisions may pose initial challenges, requiring thoughtful planning and coordination to ensure long-term safeguarding effectiveness.
