Malpensa North Rail Access represents over 15 years of strategic cooperation between SEA Milan Airports and Ferrovienord (regional rail network manager), supported by the EC and CINEA through more than €90m in co-funding under five consecutive TEN-T/CEF grants – a unique case in Europe outside major cross-border projects. Phase 1 (T1-T2 rail link), completed in 2016, has significantly enhanced airport accessibility, with rail modal share rising from 12% to 20%. The T2-Gallarate extension (operational January 2026) will integrate Malpensa into the high-speed and international rail network, targeting a 25% modal share and saving around 3,000 tonnes of CO₂.
