Enhancing Ireland’s connectivity with Europe’s newest runway

19 Mar 2026
Room 9
Day 3 - Airport capacity and flexibility
In 2022, after 50 years of safeguarding, Dublin Airport delivered Europe's newest full-length runway. Construction progressed through the challenges of Covid restrictions and was ultimately delivered on time and on budget. The total project, which cost €320m, is delivering incredible value for money to all stakeholders. The presentation will cover the strategic land planning from the 1960s, the volatility of the aviation industry over the years, navigating restrictive environmental conditions and the tactical release of scarce runway capacity via slots to airlines. Valuable lessons were learned throughout the project, which will be shared with the audience.
  • A coherent masterplan with ambitious vision is key to safeguarding land for future use
  • How to minimize cost and construction complexity on future projects
  • It is never too early to progress planning applications and appeal restrictive conditions
  • Landside sites are key for ensuring on-time delivery and on-budget cost
  • Efficient design needs to strike a balance between the various stakeholder requirements
Speakers
Simon Fagan, head of capacity planning and economic regulation - daa (Dublin Airport)
