Developing a multi-player self bag drop environment at Athens International Airport
19 Mar 2026
Airport capacity and flexibility
Athens International Airport (AIA) is responding to the surge in passenger volumes – currently +30% above pre-Covid levels – with a strategic enhancement of its infrastructure. While the expansion of the passenger terminal is not expected to be completed before 2032, AIA is proactively investing in a new ecosystem of self bag drop devices. This initiative is the outcome of a collaborative effort among AIA, multiple airlines and the three ground handlers, emphasizing shared use and operational synergy. The primary goal is to improve the passenger experience by alleviating congestion within the terminal through increased drop-off throughput and reduced queuing times.
- The strategic role of Athens International Airport as the facilitator, coordinator and marketer of new development projects
- Achieving win-win solutions among competitors (ground handlers, airlines) through a synergetic approach
- Deciding on the number of required SBDO islands to adequately cover demand considering the limitations set by the local ground handling regime
- Retrofit versus replacement SBDOs, one- versus two-step approach, combination of CUSS and bag-tag kiosks and the resulting layout: the optimal pick
- Number of floor walkers and optimal behavior to maximize bag drop-off throughput as well as enhance customer experience in a congested environment
