Environment and sustainability
A flash flood caused by an intense rainfall event in 2021 affected MXP Airport. This triggered the planning of activities for flood risk reduction, which have been incorporated into the Malpensa Resilience Project (Re-MXP).
This project is aimed at enhancing the airport’s resilience against climate change. The initiative includes infrastructure upgrades and the development of a multi-hazard smart monitoring system, supporting informed decision-making. Re-MXP has been included in the European Commission 'Support study on the climate adaptation and cross-border investment needs of the TEN-T network.' The project is now part of the SEA Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Malpensa Airport.
- CCAP strengthens mitigation actions and promotes sustainable airport operations, aiming at continuous improvement and proactive planning
- Re-MXP project demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted climate adaptation measures in enhancing the resilience of infrastructure to extreme events
- Multidisciplinary approach and active stakeholder engagement proved essential throughout the project and CCAP development and lifecycle
- A dynamic approach based on performance indicators, periodic review and knowledge sharing is key to ensure broader efficiency of the plan
- Identification of priority interventions and being open to opportunities for public-private co-financing, optimizing resource allocation and effectiveness
