Circular economy strategies for airports: waste, technology and value creation

Environment and sustainability
Aeroporti di Roma is implementing advanced circularity solutions across the entire waste cycle (production, collection and disposal). Key initiatives include circular procurement (spare parts, uniform surplus), active engagement of commercial tenants and third parties through incentive-based waste tariff schemes, and beverage packaging guidelines for F&B tenants (endorsed by our ministry). Smart bins for passengers and separate collection of valuable waste streams (WEEE, batteries) are being deployed. These actions not only drive environmental sustainability but also generate measurable economic value, reducing disposal costs, optimizing resource use and creating new opportunities for value recovery through data-driven management and partnerships.
- Circular solutions at ADR cut waste and costs, proving sustainability and financial value can go hand in hand
- Smart tech and data-driven waste management enable efficient, measurable improvements in both operations and sustainability
- Airports can help national circular economy goals by engaging stakeholders, developing and sharing best practices
