Day 1 - Environment and sustainability
Kansai International Airport (KIX) is located on an artificial island reclaimed offshore, and in 2018 it was struck by a large typhoon, resulting in severe flooding damage. After the disaster, the design wave was reviewed based on recent typhoon records, and efforts have been made to strengthen the seawalls. Such adaptation to climate change is a critical challenge. In this presentation, we will showcase post-disaster measures at KIX and present an evaluation of changes in external forces to be considered in future design, as sea-level rise and increased rainfall intensity are expected due to climate change.
- Review of design wave criteria at KIX based on recent typhoon records
- Initiatives at KIX to address sea-level rise associated with climate change
- Initiatives at KIX to address increased rainfall intensity associated with climate change
