Top 5 Priorities for Airports in 2026 by Justin Erbacci, ACI World Director General
As we move into 2026, global aviation stands at a defining moment. Demand for air travel continues to grow, confirming aviation’s central role in economic and social development—but the conditions needed to support that growth are becoming more complex.
The latest ACI World Airport Traffic Forecasts 2025–2054, our flagship forecasting publication, underlines both the opportunities and the challenges ahead.

Global passenger traffic is forecasted to reach 10.2 billion passengers in 2026, with long-term demand projected to nearly double by the mid-2040s, reaching around 18.8 billion passengers. This growth remains structurally strong, driven largely by emerging and developing markets, but is increasingly uneven across regions.

At the same time, we see this growth being potentially constrained by infrastructure limitations, aircraft delivery challenges, operational pressures, and rising sustainability expectations. The message is clear: long-term growth is not guaranteed without coordinated action across the aviation ecosystem.

Against this backdrop, ACI World’s priorities for 2026 are focused on helping airports to accommodate this growth, to remain resilient, sustainable, and investable, and to continue to deliver safe, secure, and efficient passenger experiences.

1. Advocate Decisively for Airports Worldwide

Advocacy remains central to our mission. In 2026, we will begin implementing our Policy Agenda 2030, a 5-year manifesto of ACI’s global advocacy priorities, sharpening engagement with governments, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), industry partners, and other international organizations on issues that most directly affect airport operations, safety and security, sustainability, investment, and competitiveness.

Among many areas, a core objective of this work is reinforcing recognition of airports as highly competitive businesses in their own right, and essential economic contributors. We will continue to represent airport interests across major global aviation and economic forums as well as key industry events.

Key areas will include:

Advancing Airport Economic Policy

At ICAO in 2026, one of ACI World’s key priorities will be constructive and effective participation in the Seventh Worldwide Air Transport Conference (ATConf/7), the principal global forum for shaping air transport economic policy. Building on the ICAO Strategic Plan 2026–2050 and the outcomes of the 42nd ICAO Assembly, we will advocate for policies that enable air transport infrastructure investment and long-term financing, supporting a sound, economically viable, and affordable civil aviation system.

Modernizing Global Airport Slot Policy

Slot policy will remain a priority as capacity pressures intensify. In 2026, we plan to advance a concrete policy vision to bring global airport slot policy into line with modern market realities and public-interest objectives. Outreach also will be expanded to help airports better understand the operational and commercial implications of slot allocation across different local and operating contexts.

2. Driver Environmental Stewardship and Net-Zero Progress

Environmental stewardship will continue to shape our work. We will release a milestone report assessing how airports are progressing towards net-zero emissions by 2050. We will continue driving sectoral efforts to adapt to climate change, and advance practical solutions through initiatives such as the Sustainable Aviation Fuels compendium and a revision of our guidelines to counter wildlife trafficking.

This work is further reinforced by the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, managed by ACI EUROPE, which continues to provide a globally recognized framework for airports to measure, manage, and reduce their carbon emissions.

3. Strengthen ACI World’s Global Authority on Data and Intelligence, and Innovation

Effective policy and investment decisions depend on credible data. In 2026, we will continue to strengthen our traffic, forecasting, and economics publications, ensuring they remain a trusted global reference, supported by the regular release of flagship reports—including the Airport Economics Report and KPIs, the World Airport Traffic Report (WATR), and the World Airport Traffic Forecast (WATF) —as well as quarterly industry updates through the ACI World Airport Industry Report (AIR), following its successful launch in 2025.

Following the release of the Airport Development Concessions Agreements: Global Approaches and Guidelines for Public–Private Partnerships in October 2025, and subsequently published in Spanish in February 2026, we will continue to expand our practical guidance for airports, governments, and investors.

This will be complemented by the development of two new global research projects: the first on global airport CAPEX needs 2026–2055 and the second on airport development models. These insights will support more informed planning, financing, and delivery of the infrastructure required to accommodate long-term demand.

We will continue to act as a catalyst for progress. In 2026, targeted task forces will advance work on seamless passenger solutions and aerodrome certification, supporting more consistent implementation across regions.

Building on the launch of the One Stop Security Handbook in January, we will work with ICAO, members, and industry partners to promote wider adoption and support practical implementation, contributing to improved efficiency and a more seamless passenger journey.

4.  Deliver Trusted Programs and Services for Airport Excellence

Supporting airports also means delivering trusted programs and services that respond to evolving needs. Building on our strong portfolio, this year marks the 20th Anniversary of Airport Service Quality (ASQ), which will be marked with  the rollout of a refreshed ASQ program, featuring enhanced quality control and a strengthened value proposition.

We will deepen engagement with the World Governing Board and launch the ACI World Young Professionals Program, investing in the next generation of airport leaders and reinforcing long-term industry resilience.

In parallel, we continue to expand and evolve our Global Training program, delivering high-impact, practical learning opportunities that develop airport leaders and equip airport professionals with the skills needed to navigate operational complexity, technological change and sustainability challenges. Through updated curricula, flexible delivery formats, and closer alignment with member priorities, Global Training remains a cornerstone of our commitment to capacity building across all regions.

5. Strengthening Governance and Leadership

These priorities for 2026 have been guided and approved by the ACI World Governing Board (WGB). We are proud to welcome Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, as Chair of the Governing Board for the 2026–2027 term. His global experience, proven leadership, and deep understanding of airport operations and policy come at a pivotal moment for the industry. As airports accelerate innovation, strengthen resilience, and advance sustainability, his ability to build consensus and drive strategic progress will be instrumental.

Justin Erbacci, ACI World Director General; Candace McGraw, ACI World Governing Board Chair 2024-2026, and Jost Lammers, Chair of the ACI World Governing Board (2026-today).

Above all, ACI World’s work is driven by—and for—the global airport community we serve every day. Thank you to our members and partners for your continued trust and engagement, and for the role you play in strengthening air travel and its positive impact on societies and economies worldwide.
